How to Boost Your Immune System During the Coronavirus Outbreak – What to Know

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has led to growing concerns about how to avoid catching it. As scientists continue to work on creating antivirals and vaccines that can cure the contagious disease, everyone must be extra proactive and take the holistic approach to general health maintenance to boost their immune system and improve overall health. Beyond proper handwashing and social distancing, here are other things you can do to help your body fight off COVID-19:

Break a sweat.

Going to the gym to break a sweat isn’t a good idea right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t exercise in the comfort of your own home. Exercise is integral to keep your body functioning well as it can reduce inflammation and support infection-fighting cells. While you’re cooped up at home, make it a point to establish a workout routine that will get your whole body moving. Do squats, pushups, planks, and leg lifts. Do cardio by introducing burpees, jumping jacks, and jumping rope into your routine. Make it a point to complete at least 30 minutes per day to remain healthy.

Manage your stress.

It goes without saying that this is a stressful time for everyone. However, stress can suppress your immune system, which is the last thing you need at the moment. Prevent and relieve stress by indulging in a good book, watching a feel-good show, calling a friend, or taking a nice warm bath. Playing with your pet and tending to your garden can also help. You can also look into meditating to clear your head and boost your mood.

Get proper sleep.

Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep to stay healthy and function properly. However, this is not a hard and fast rule. You should listen to your body and figure out the optimum number of hours you need to be productive. Some can get away with six, while some need approximately 10 hours. Don’t allow your body to get too tired. You should aim to get sufficient sleep so the body can recover and repair essential functions, including your immune system.

Eat your fruits and vegetables.

Staying at home with a stock full of food doesn’t give you an excuse to resort to eating junk. You should be mindful of what you’re eating and don’t indulge too much in sweets and carbohydrates. Rather than reaching for another box of cookies, how about eating grapes or nuts instead? It’s recommended that you eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day to stay healthy. While your food options may be limited, try to opt for healthful choices when they are available to you.

Cut back on alcohol and stop smoking.

Drinking alcohol can help alleviate stress, but make sure to only drink in moderation. Drinking excessive alcohol can only make you feel worse and need to rehydrate and rest even more. It can also impair the immune system. If you must drink, limit yourself to a glass or two.

As for smoking, do your best to cut back. You may opt to practice light smoking instead if you can’t quit altogether. But you should also keep in mind that stopping it completely is the best thing you can do for your body.
